Smart & Final Extra offers more to shoppers, job seekers in Compton

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A Smart & Final Extra store opened in the city of Compton Friday, offering more options for buyers and dozens of new jobs for residents.

The grocery giant, located in the 200 block of Compton Boulevard, is the first "superstore" to open in the Hub City.

"The products here are great and the prices are lower," said shopper Sara Acosta.

This is the first time city residents will get to buy groceries in bulk without having to purchase a membership.

The store also hired 60 people from the Compton neighborhood and customers were ecstatic.

"Folks just love to come in here," said resident Ellen Harper. "It's so beautiful! I love it. I love it!"

Harper, who for over 60 years has seen stores come and go, said success will be determined by commitment to the community.

"Just keep it up," she said. "Start it right and keep it up."
